“Sunshine in record form — proper West African disco/boogie heat.”
Why I Stock This Record
SAI GALAXY have made one of my favourite modern takes on Nigerian disco and boogie. Drawing clear inspiration from the golden era of 70s and 80s Nigerian artists like Nkono Teles, Jake Sollo and Mike Umoh, this record captures that warm, bouncy West African groove perfectly.
It’s got bright synth lines, solid rhythms and a really uplifting, feel-good energy that makes it a joy to play. I’ve been reaching for this one a lot recently — it works brilliantly as a warm-up record or when you want to bring some positive, sunny vibes to the dancefloor.
The Soundway pressing is clean and sounds excellent. If you’re into contemporary West African disco, boogie or funk with a modern edge, this is a must-have. One I genuinely rate and play regularly.
Review
Sai Galaxy is a collective that draws inspiration and influence from 70s and 80s Nigerian artists such as Nkono Teles, Jake Sollo and Mike Umoh. Australian multi-instrumentalist Simon Durrington leads the way with Olugbade Okunade - former trumpet player from Seun Kuti's Egypt 80 - as well and guests Gabriel Otu, Ray Ledon and Vanessa Baker also playing on these sessions. There is everything from West African funk to a touch of psychedelia, with dance floor ready tunes like 'Get It In The Sun' irresistible to all who hear it.
