“Crisp, futuristic Nigerian boogie with serious dancefloor energy.”
Why I Stock This Record
This is one of my favourite tracks from the Doing It In Lagos compilation. Nkono Teles delivers a sharp, forward-thinking take on 80s Nigerian boogie and synth-funk.
The drum machine patterns are tight and cutting, the synths are bright and melodic, and the overall groove has that raw, creative Lagos energy that made the scene so special. It sits perfectly between boogie, disco and early electronic funk.
I’ve been playing this record for a while now and it always gets a great reaction — it brings a fresh, uplifting energy to the set without losing that underground edge. The Soundway reissue sounds clean and punchy.
If you’re into West African boogie, 80s Nigerian funk or synth-driven grooves, this one is a standout. Clean copy and plays strong every time.
Review
Nkono Teles was one of the standouts of the Doing It In Lagos compilation by Soundway, which proved a best seller. He is someone who worked on, arranged and or produced music for more than 100 other artists in Nigeria across the 80s, including playing keys with Tony Allen's band. Now he gets the spotlight firmly on himself with a retrospective mini-comp fun of his unique boogie and funky rhythms, cutting edge drum machine sounds and mix of synths and guitars. It's a collection fans of the likes of William Onyeabor and Steve Monite will love.
